Tour of the AOP chestnut conservation orchard. Discover the challenges involved in conserving the 65 varieties of Ardèche AOP chestnuts and combating climate change. Organised by: Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park.
Ages 11 and over
Chestnut cultivation faces many challenges due to global warming. This orchard will help preserve genetic heritage and the diversity of local varieties, and enable long-term study of how different varieties behave in different climates.
Planted in 2025, this conservation orchard brings together the 65 varieties of the Châtaigne d’Ardèche PDO. It serves as a site for experimentation and monitoring, designed to preserve the diversity of local varieties and support the future of chestnut cultivation in the Ardèche.
This planting project is being carried out in partnership with the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park, the Ardèche Chestnut PDO and the Chamber of Agriculture.
History, culture and heritage
The orchard comprises two experimental plots that are subject to scientific and technical monitoring. The first contains young chestnut trees planted on terraces and grafted onto the Marsol rootstock, a hybrid that is naturally resistant to ink disease. The second is situated in a former abandoned orchard, where traditional varieties are grafted onto the European chestnut (Castanea sativa).
