Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a young painter in high demand, has been unable to work since the death of his wife, much to the despair of Armand, his gallery owner. One drunken evening, Antoine attempts to contact his wife through a fortune-teller. Unbeknownst to him, he is actually speaking to Suzanne, a humble fairground worker who has slipped into the caravan to steal food. Suzanne proves to have a knack for deception and, soon aided by Armand, she stages a series of fake séances. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but for Suzanne things become complicated as she slowly falls in love with the man she is manipulating…
