Soviet Union, 1937. Thousands of letters from prisoners wrongly accused by the regime are burned in a prison cell. Against all odds, one of them reaches its destination, the desk of the newly appointed local prosecutor, Alexander Kornev. He struggles to meet the prisoner, a victim of the secret police, the NKVD. A seasoned Bolshevik of integrity, the young prosecutor believes there has been a mistake. His quest for justice will take him all the way to the Attorney General's office in Moscow. At the height of Stalin's great purges, this is the story of one man's descent into a totalitarian regime that dare not speak its name.
