Amidst a chaos of fragments of memories and fantasies, the story unfolds of an outsider dancer in search of a sense of belonging, who dreams of peace, love and Johnny Depp… Her words lead her to dance, and her dances lead her to tell her story.
A WOMAN IS AN ARTICHOKE by Ofra Hoffman, writer and performer:
A humorous (almost) autobiographical tale, told through dance and narration … somewhere between Ionesco, Indian dance and an identity crisis. By Ofra Hoffman. Directed by Patrick Rabier.
Amidst a chaos of fragments of memories and fantasies, the journey of a marginalised dancer in search of a sense of belonging unfolds – a dancer who dreams of peace, love and Johnny Depp…. Her words lead her to dance; her dances lead her to tell her story.
I am an immigrant; foreign soil remains a stage for me. Learning and interpreting the codes of a simple encounter requires skill and keen observation. We undergo a transformation in order to belong, to try to belong, to decode, to assimilate. I wonder about the nature of this new identity, which is forged when we leave our country and our mother tongue, in this back-and-forth between what we act out and who we are, between the identity we create for ourselves when we leave a country and what remains of the other world, which, in a way, is still our home
