Did you know? Every “Echelle” in Thueyts has its own legend!
Echelle du Roi and Echelle de la Reine
In ancient times, a fierce battle raged in the Vernède plain.
To better lead the battle, the leaders—likely a Queen from Auvergne and a King from the East or the Rhône Valley, disputing hunting grounds—climbed the rocks overlooking the plain by more or less steep paths. These paths were later called the Echelle du Roi and Echelle de la Reine.
Despite their bravery, the people of Auvergne were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. The Queen, in despair, wept loudly, and the King, moved by her sobs, ordered the battle to cease.
The Queen was very beautiful despite her tears, and the King was young and handsome… The legend does not say, but all indications suggest they married and had many little Athogiens!
