Montpezat-sous-Bauzon, Ardèche
Opening : All year round.
The maar (volcanic explosion crater) of Chambon cut into the base to extract stones cut for the construction of some houses of the village.
Located a little down south of the Vestide du Pal Maar, it is crossed by the Chambon creek . This maar is totally cut in the base and its crater is almost circular (about 500 meters in diameter).
The southern rim of the crater makes it possible to observe both products of phreatomagmatic origin and products of Strombolian dynamism. This volcano has therefore undergone several eruptive phases. Its complex history ends with the softness of the late Strombolian cone, which also seems to have taken away part of the maar.
