Historic site and monument in Montpezat-sous-Bauzon, Ardèche
Private property; no public access. Only a few sections of the walls remain of the polygonal enclosure of the Château des Montlaur, formerly known as Le Chastelas, built around the 12th century on a hilltop overlooking the Fontaulière and Pourseille valleys.
The lords of Montlaur thus controlled the important Pal road linking Viviers to Le Puy. Below, on the southern side, a castle town had developed, which has now completely disappeared, giving way to the Lower Town. The castle itself was no longer inhabited at the time of the Revolution. It was here that, in 1519, Catherine Peyretonne, from the hamlet of Villaret, was interrogated, imprisoned and sentenced to be burned at the stake as a witch.
