To go from Coucouron to Aubenas, de Montlaur followed the natural road, the Ardèche and Mayres. At the approach of this village, a strategic point attracted their attention, the nipple of Saint-Médard, inaccessible from everywhere, except from the north. This made them build a fortress to protect the valley and the village of Mayres, their property.
