Hiking trail in Thueyts: Devil's bridge / Fargebelle
Place du Champ de Mars
07330 Thueyts
Sport in Thueyts, Ardèche
Opening : All year round.
Explore the Pont du diable valley, on the other bank of the Ardèche, on the heights of the ancient hamlet of Fargebelle! Take the famous "Ladder of the Queen" for panoramic views off the beaten track!
Loop / Level: Medium / 4.8 km / 2h30
Some very fine views of the 80m-high basalt flow of the Giants causeway and over the entire upper Ardèche valley.
It also provides a better understanding on how the Thueyts volcano changed the landscapes over the years, clearly visible from the viewpoint at the end of the Via Ferrata, and its basaltic flow. Less "urban" than its little sister, the King's Ladder, the Queen's Ladder walk takes you up to the hamlet of Fargebelle, typical of 14th-century Cévennes hamlets.
The walk then takes you through a beautiful chestnut grove before you cross the Ardèche again on the Haute Vernède bridge, which is less known than the Devil's bridge but just as aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, although the Queen's Ladder is a stone staircase with 215 fairly regular steps, the King's Ladder is irregular in size and shape, carved out of volcanic rock... So you'll need to be brave to climb the Queen's ladder before reaching the top of the basalt flow again.
